Children’s Dental Issues
When faced with a dental emergency parents should call Dr. Calcagno right away. In addition, you can address the immediate pain and discomfort of your children. Here are five common emergencies and the first response emergency care tips.
- Toothache: This can be caused by everything from food caught between teeth to fractured teeth, even cavities. Between the teeth and on either side of the achey tooth, floss gently to dislodge food particles. If wedged food particles aren’t the cause of the pain, rinse your child’s mouth with warm water and use a cold compress to reduce swelling. Come to our dentist office as soon as possible.
- Missing Tooth: If a child’s tooth is knocked out, immediately recover the tooth. Do not touch the root, but gently rinse away foreign debris with water. Do not remove any tissue that is still attached. If the tooth can’t be placed into the socket, put the tooth in a glass of milk until you can get the child and the tooth to Dr. Calcagno.
- Tooth Luxation: Following trauma, sometimes a tooth remains in the socket but is bent or protruding at an unnatural angle. This sometimes means jaw fracture. Apply a cold, wet compress and administer over-the-counter pain reliever, if possible, according to the medical instruction. Then head to our office for professional help.
- Broken Crown: When a crown is broken or missing, the sensitive dentin or pulp of the affected tooth is exposed. Rinse the child’s mouth with warm water and apply a compress. Give him/her a pain reliever and don’t let him/her eat anything until after seeing Dr.Calcagno.
- Dental Intrusion: This occurs when trauma forces a tooth up into the jaw, fracturing the tooth socket and damaging the tooth. Immediately rinse your child’s mouth with cold water and apply a cold compress. Administer necessary pain relievers and come see us.
