Question: Why do we need crowns?
Answer: A restoration can serve a number of different functions. For example, we can use them to repair damaged teeth, restore malformed or imperfect teeth, or repair decayed or infected teeth. We can also them to anchor a dental bridge into place or restore a single tooth dental implant.
Question: What are they made from?
Answer: They are made from a variety of materials. Our office uses ceramic, since the material is not only stain-resistant, but can last for decades and withstand bite forces and pressure. Ceramic can also mimic the appearance of tooth enamel, so the newly repaired tooth blends with surrounding natural teeth.
Question: How do CAD/CAM Crowns differ from traditional restorations?
Answer: Traditional ones often require at least two visits. In between these visits you may have to wear a temporary crown. However, CEREC employs advanced technology, so the dentist can prepare the teeth, take digital impressions and design the crown, then upload the information to the CEREC machine, will fabricates the restoration from ceramic. In the same visit the doctor checks the fit and adheres the restoration to the prepared tooth with a bonding agent.
