How does candy lead to cavities? The problems start when bacteria break down sugar particles, creating a coating of plaque and increasing oral acidity. The layer of tooth enamel will become weak, allowing bacteria to reach the inner layers of dentin. There, a cavity forms. Soon the patient experiences tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, as well as toothaches. Without treatment an infection may develop that can threaten the stability of the tooth and lead to more uncomfortable symptoms.

During your checkup the dentist may examine your teeth with a digital x-ray and an intraoral camera. This allows the doctor to obtain a clear picture of your oral health and identify decay in the earliest stages, treating the issue before it progresses. In most cases, we will place a dental filling to treat the decay and protect the tooth. If the cavity is severe, we can place a lifelike dental crown.
What Happens During a Cleaning?
A cleaning allows the doctor to remove the plaque buildup that threatens the teeth. Using either a manual tool or an ultrasonic scaler, the doctor or hygienist removes the plaque and tartar, polishing the tooth for a smooth feel and a brighter appearance.
