Halloween is just a few weeks away. While a little candy is okay, Halloween can allow kids to binge on chocolate and candy for days, putting their smiles at risk. Instead of offering candy, there are alternatives you can give out and also offer to your own kids. Try offering trick or treaters a few of these fun Halloween treat alternatives.
Sugar and Tooth Decay
How do sugary treats lead to cavities? Bacteria will break down the sugar particles, in the process coating the teeth in a sticky biofilm known as plaque. The process also increases oral acidity. Combined, oral acidity and plaque buildup can cause tooth enamel to erode, allowing the bacteria to reach the inner tooth structure and cause a cavity to form. Soon, the patient may experience tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, or possibly a persistent toothache.
If you do develop a cavity, we can treat the issue with a lifelike dental filling. To help reduce your risk, we suggest brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing every night before bed. You should also see your dentist once every six months for a dental cleaning. With the right steps, you can reduce the risk of tooth decay.
