The Dangers of Broken Teeth
When a tooth breaks, the outer layer of enamel is compromised. Bacteria can now bypass the enamel and reach the inner dentin, a more sensitive layer of tooth structure. Cavities can then form, leading to discomfort and unless treated, the onset of a dental infection. Preserving and protecting your tooth means seeking treatment for damage, even if it appears minor.
Dental Bonding
We can often repair minor chips in a single visit using dental boding. The procedure employs the same composite resin we use for dental fillings. We shade the material to better match the tooth and then apply it in several layers. As the material cures under a light, we can shape and sculpt the tooth. We complete the procedure by thoroughly polishing the tooth, which helps ensure a lifelike appearance. We can also use bonding to close gap between teeth and mask discoloration.
CEREC Dental Crowns
If the damage is more severe, we may instead recommend a dental crown. The crown acts a cap, covering the visible portion of the tooth. Placement involves preparing the tooth by removing a small amount of tooth structure and then taking digital impressions. The impression will be used to design the restoration, which is then milled from ceramic in the same visit. We will check the fit, make any necessary adjustments, and then place the completed crown in the same visit.
