At Calcagno Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, we understand how momentous and exciting becoming a mother truly is. Expectant mothers typically become very mindful of their diets and lifestyle to protect their unborn children. However, many pregnant women are surprised to learn how important preventive dental care is during pregnancy. Our excellent cosmetic and family dentist, Dr. Gilly Calcagno discusses how important oral healthcare is during pregnancy and offers helpful information for expecting mothers in our community.
Visiting the Dentist Office
During pregnancy, it is important to receive oral examinations and professional cleanings. Because of hormonal fluctuations pregnant women are very susceptible to developing gum disease. With routine cleanings that remove tartar buildup, our team can decrease your risk for gum disease. Regular visits to our office will also allow us to closely monitor your oral health to prevent potential future problems.
Eating a Balanced Diet
During the second trimester, your baby’s teeth will begin to develop. During pregnancy, it is important to ingest proper amounts of phosphorus, calcium, folic acid, and vitamins A, C, and D to help ensure that your baby’s teeth develop properly. We also encourage patients to discuss all medications they take with their healthcare professionals. Certain medications such as antibiotics can harm tooth development.
Practicing Meticulous Oral Hygiene
In most cases, restorative or cosmetic dental procedures will be delayed until after pregnancy. For this reason, expecting mothers should take extra care of their teeth with thorough oral hygiene. Pregnant women should be sure to floss their teeth every day and brush their teeth a minimum of two times each day. Feel free to ask our team for demonstrations on proper oral hygiene techniques.
