For the entire month of April we have been recognizing Oral Cancer Awareness Month. Along with dental and medical professionals nationwide, we have been reminding people about the possible dangers of this disease and the importance of receiving a screening. When was your last oral cancer screening? If you are due for an exam, remember we are offering them free of charge throughout the month of April.
The Warning Signs of Oral Cancer
If you experience any persistent discomfort or pain that doesn’t subside after about two weeks then you may need to have an examination. Other possible warning signs include:
- Sores or lesions in the mouth
- Patches speckled with white and red
- Hoarseness or pain when chewing/eating
- Unexplained bleeding
- Rough patches
- Unexplained weight loss or changes in the voice
If you encounter one or more of these symptoms then please contact a dental professional right away for an examination. Uncovering oral cancer in the early stages is essential for improving the chances of recovery.
When Do I Need a Screening?
You should have a screening at least once a year. We offer them as part of our routine checkups and during April, these services are free. Over half of the 45,000 or more diagnosed every year will die within five years as a result of the disease. In most cases, this is simply due to not uncovering the issue in the early stages. Please remember to have your mouth examined annually.
How Long Does a Screening Last?
The entire process takes only a few minutes. In a short amount of time you can protect your smile and overall health. If you have any questions or concerns about the screening process then please contact our office today.
