Question: Why do we need crowns?
Answer: What’s the purpose of a restoration? Our teeth can develop damage as a result of injury or advanced tooth decay compromising the structure. A crown fits over the visible parts of the tooth, repairing damage and protecting the remnants of the natural tooth structure. Patients can then avoid further decay or the risk of an infection. We can also use them to correct cosmetic concerns, ranging from permanent teeth stains to malformed tooth structure.
Question: What are restorations?
Answer: They may include fillings, crowns, or even veneers. The crown is made from a variety of materials, but most commonly ceramic. They are designed based on impressions taken of the teeth and placed with a powerful bonding agent. On average, they can last for decades.
Question: What’s the difference between regular restorations and CEREC?
Answer: Typically, the fabrication and placement process takes two visits and people will need to wear a temporary for about two weeks between visits. However, CEREC employs CAD/CAM technology to allow a dentist to take digital impressions, design the restoration and fabricate it all within a single sitting. Patients won’t need temporaries.
Question: Will they look like my other teeth?
Answer: Yes. Ceramic actually reflects light in a similar manner as tooth enamel. The restoration will look natural and blend with your surrounding teeth.
