Frequently Asked Questions About Removing Teeth Stains
Question: What causes teeth stains to form?
Answer: For surface stains, also known as extrinsic stains, the cause can be sugary foods and drinks, drinks with dark pigments (soda, red wine, tea, coffee, fruit juice), and smoking. For stains below the enamel, also known as intrinsic discoloration, the cause can include injury to the tooth, fluorosis, or exposure to tetracycline at a young age.
Question: How does teeth whitening work?
Answer: First, you will come to the office so we can create a set of custom-made trays and perform an initial treatment. Then, we send you home with the trays and a powerful bleaching gel. At home, you will fill the trays with gel and wear them for about one to two hours a day. The total treatment time typically takes a week to ten days.
Question: When do you recommend veneers or bonding?
Answer: While teeth whitening can address extrinsic stains and minor intrinsic ones, some cases of discoloration can be so severe that the best option is masking them. With dental bonding, we use the same composite resin we use for tooth-colored fillings to hide them. With veneers, we use a thin and lifelike restoration to mask stains and completely reshape the tooth in the process.
Question: What can I do to keep the smile bright?
Answer: By taking care of your smile, which includes brushing, flossing, and having your teeth cleaned every six months. You should also drink more water and cut back on sugary foods and drinks.
