When a tooth requires restoration, we may recommend a natural looking dental crown. When we talk to patients about this, most immediately ask how long crown placement will take. After all, between work and family, few people have time in their busy schedules for multiple visits to the dentist to receive a restoration. Fortunately, we can use advanced technology to complete the entire procedure in just one visit.
When Do You Prescribe Crowns?
We may recommend them to address a number of different scenarios. For example, we often prescribe one to correct advanced tooth decay in cases where a filling wouldn’t be substantial enough. They can also be used to fix chipped or even fractured teeth. In situations where a patient loses a tooth, we can use them to anchor a dental bridge in place or to even restore a single tooth dental implant.
The CEREC System
In the past, two to three visits would be necessary to complete the process. In addition, you would need to wear a temporary restoration for about two weeks. Now, we can prepare the tooth and take detailed digital impressions. Using the information gathered, we can create a 3D computer model and upload the information to the CEREC machine. The machine then mills the restoration from a solid block of ceramic. Once complete, we test the fit and make any necessary adjustments. Finally, we place the restoration in the same visit, restoring your tooth to full function and health.
How Do You Maintain Them?
You can take a few simple steps to help ensure your new restoration last for many years to come. First, always brush and floss your teeth daily as the dentist recommends. Next, see your dentist every six months for a checkup (to monitor the new restoration) and a cleaning (to protect it from plaque and periodontal problems).
