A recent article by the British Dental Health Foundation has supported this idea with its latest study revealing a significant association between certain antibodies that form in response to oral bacteria, and a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. The Harbingers of Pancreatic Cancer
Researchers took the blood samples of over 800 European males, approximately half of whom had pancreatic cancer. When compared with the other half, who were demographically similar, but cancer-free, the blood samples from cancer patients contained markedly increased levels of the antibody produced in response to the periodontal bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis.
The study was careful to use blood samples that were taken, in some instances, up to a decade prior to a pancreatic cancer diagnosis. This means the likelihood that antibody levels were increased due to the presence of cancer is very low. That is not to say that a clear causal link has been established between the presence of the bacteria and the development of pancreatic cancer, but the study is certainly basis for further research on the links between the two.
