Another Recession to Worry About: Your Gums

The ideal mouth comes complete with a healthy set of intact gums. However, very few of us have the ideal mouth. There can be any number of causes for something called gum recession, where your gingival tissue literally shrinks away from your teeth. As we age, some recession is inevitable, even with good oral hygiene. Surprising to some, 80% of American people have some degree of gum disease, which, when allowed to transition into full blown periodontitis, is one of the major causes of gum recession. Your Rochester dentist, Dr. Janet Calcagno, will highlight some others.

Gum Recession Causes

  • Genetics: Some people are simply more susceptible to gum disease.
  • Aggressive Oral Care: Brushing your teeth too hard can cause the enamel on your teeth to wear away which can eventually lead to your gums receding.
  • Poor Oral Care: Not brushing and flossing enough turns plaque into calculus, also known as tartar, which can only be removed by a professional cleaning at your dentist’s office.
  • Hormonal Changes: Hormone levels fluctuate dramatically throughout a woman’s life, which can make gums more sensitive and vulnerable.
  • Use of Tobacco Products: Tobacco users tend to have more plaque on teeth.
  • Bruxism: Teeth grinding can put repetitive force on the teeth that can potentially cause gums to recede.
  • A misaligned bite or crooked teeth: Gum recession can occur in cases of crooked teeth and malocclusion similar to the way it happens with bruxism. The misalignment causes excess force that takes a toll on the gums over time.
  • Oral Jewelry: Lip and tongue piercings can rub the gums forcing the gingival tissue to wear away.

Avoid Gum Recession with the Help of Dental Checkups

Prevention of gum recession is possible in the same way that you can slow or halt any dental issues. Practice good and regular oral hygiene (brushing teeth and flossing regularly) and visit your dentist every six months for exams and dental cleanings. If you’d like to arrange an appointment, contact our Rochester dentist office at (507)281-3659.
