The relationship between a patient and a healthcare provider is a sacred one. When we place our well-being or the well-being of our family in the hands of a nurse, doctor, or dentist, we want to feel confident that this person has our best interest in mind. The amount of trust we place in certain professions is the focus of an ongoing poll conducted by polling powerhouse Gallup. According to the poll, which was conducted during November of 2012, dentists rank among the most dependable. Your Rochester dentist, Dr. Gilly Calcagno, talks about the poll’s findings and looks at the American Dental Association’s response.
About the Survey
Gallup conducted this telephone survey during November 26-29, 2012. The people participating in the poll used a five-point scale to rate the ethics and integrity of 22 professions. Participants could award a profession and ranking ranging from “Very high” to “Very low.” Unsurprisingly, congressmen and used car salesmen ranked at the bottom of the list for honesty and integrity.
Medical Professionals Rank at the Top
With a few exceptions, the top ten most trusted professions belonged to the field of healthcare. Dentists ranked 5th on the list, just behind nurses, medical doctors, and pharmacists (and, interestingly, engineers). Dentists have consistently made the top ten in this survey since Gallup began conducting it in 1981.
The ADA’s Response
The American Dental Association’s president, Dr. Robert Faiella, was pleased but unsurprised at the survey’s findings, stating, “The ADA has a stringent Code of Ethics, and we’re pleased to see that the public recognizes that our ADA members are truly putting these into practice.” Indeed, the ADA asserts outright in their code of ethics that they understand the amount of trust the public at large place in the dental profession. To earn this trust, the ADA urges its members to not only strive for clinical and technical skill needed to perform their job, but to also strive to embody principles of honesty and integrity.
