Choose from One of Two Implant Types
- Endosteal. This is the traditional type of dental implant, which is placed below the gum line and nestled within the jaw bone. These implants fuse with the jaw bone during a process called, osseointegration. Once this occurs, the implants serve as surrogate tooth roots, which provides incredible stability and longevity. Patients with sufficient jaw bone mass and otherwise sound oral health, typically receive the endosteal dentalimplants.
- Subperiosteal. When missing teeth go years without replacement, the jaw bone begins to atrophy from a lack of tooth root stimulation. This weakening in the jaw bone makes you more susceptible for further tooth loss. While this loss of jaw bone mass tends to disqualify patients from traditional dental implants, subperiosteal implants might provide an alternative.
Subperiosteal implants, or mini dental implants, sit atop of the jaw bone, yet remain under the gum line. Since the implant doesn’t penetrate the bone, the need for sufficient jaw bone mass is no longer an issue.
