Toothaches can mean many things to different people. What they all share in common, however, is that the sensitivity usually isn’t harmless, and if not addressed, it won’t likely go away on its own. Aside from “how do I find relief?” there are other questions you should ask about your toothache to determine how serious it is. For more comprehensive answers, and to find a permanent solution, you should visit your dentist as soon as possible.
Is one tooth aching, or are several teeth sensitive?
Though they’re often used interchangeably, there is a difference between a toothache and tooth sensitivity. A toothache is localized pain in your tooth, while sensitivity describes general discomfort in several or all of your teeth. The difference also lies in the causes for each, which can range from poor hygiene and weak tooth enamel (for tooth sensitivity) to a developing tooth infection, or worse (for localized toothaches).
Have you damaged your tooth lately?
If it is a toothache, you should ask yourself if you’ve recently sustained damage to the tooth. Maybe you bit down too hard on a chunk of ice, or fell and received a traumatic blow to the face that may have chipped or cracked a tooth. If so, then schedule an appointment soon so we can locate and assess the damage so we can repair it before it grows worse.
Is the pain growing worse?
If you wait to treat a toothache/tooth sensitivity because it doesn’t seem so bad, and then notice that it’s growing worse, or more persistent, then whatever’s causing the discomfort is growing worse, as well. Whether it’s a cracked tooth, or weakened tooth enamel, or receding gums that expose your teeth’s roots, hesitating to seek treatment will only make matters more dire.
