When you see the dentist, the doctor will need to carefully examine your smile to see if you require treatment. In most cases, especially if you are a new patient, an x-ray may be necessary. At Calcagno Cosmetic and Family Dentistry, we offer our patients x-rays using digital technology. How do digital x-rays work?
Digital vs. Traditional X-Rays
Traditional systems often involved biting down on uncomfortable bitewings while images were taken. Then, the images would need to be developed in chemicals before the doctor could see them or show them to the patient.
The digital alternative requires no bitewings. Instead, a sensor connected to a computer is used to gather images of the smile quickly. The images are instantly uploaded and available to view, no lengthy development process, In addition, the entire process uses around 80% less radiation than the traditional alternative.
The images available through digital technology are clearer and more detailed, allowing the doctor to make a more accurate diagnosis.
When Do We Need a Checkup?
We perform x-rays during the initial treatment and occasionally during checkups. The American Dental Association recommends having your teeth examined about once every six months. A checkup allows a doctor to check for the warning signs of:
- Tooth decay
- Gingivitis
- Gum disease
- Oral cancer
- Bruxism/TMJ disorder
Will the Doctor Also Perform a Cleaning?
Often the doctor will also perform a thorough dental cleaning during the same visit. The cleaning involves removing plaque from the teeth. Doing so reduces the risk of tooth decay and gum disease, freshening your breath and protecting your smile. As with a checkup, you need your teeth cleaned about once every six months.
