Whether your tooth is damaged from severe tooth decay or a facial injury – you may need a root canal, or endodontic treatment. Commonly use to treat an infection (like tooth decay) that has progressed, as it begins to damage the pulp (nerve) of your tooth and creates an abscess. Without treatment, you could risk losing the tooth altogether. However, a root canal can remove the infected portion and replace it to preserve your natural tooth structure. Despite what you may have heard about endodontic treatment, don’t be afraid of the procedure if your dentist recommends it. Thanks to anesthesia, you probably won’t feel a thing!
Understanding The Root Canal Procedure
Similar to a dental filling (although on a larger scale), during a root canal, your dentist begins by removing any decayed portion of your tooth structure. This usually requires removing the nerve, although the tooth can still remain in place (and function) without it. Even though it was previously known as a painful dental procedure, after the nerve has died, you won’t feel your tooth. Although, your dentist will also use additional anesthesia to numb the surrounding areas.
After your tooth is completely cleaned, your dentist will then administer a rubber-like material (known as gutta-percha) that fills the entire tooth structure, down to its roots. As the tooth is sealed, your dentist will place a dental crown (a cap-like tooth) over it for further protection. Unlike other practices, your dentists at Calcagno Cosmetic and Family Dentistry are able to place single day crowns – making for a quick treatment process.
