As we grow older, our risk of losing our permanent teeth grows as well. In order to maintain a healthy smile and good overall health, we need a full smile. Fortunately, we have options for replacing missing teeth. Do you need dentures or dental implants to replace your lost teeth and improve your oral health?
The Dangers of Adult Tooth Loss
What happens when we lose our teeth? A number of complications can develop, including:
- Difficulty eating
- Trouble communicating clearly
- Loss of jawbone tissue, leading to facial collapse
- Misalignment
- TMJ disorder and/or bruxism
You may also feel uncomfortable with your appearance. However, we can help you address and hopefully prevent these issues by replacing your missing teeth. Which option will best address your tooth loss, dentures or dental implants?
Dentures
There are actually multiple denture options. The first are known as partials, they replace multiple missing teeth, even if they are spread out across the arch. The prosthetic consist of replacement teeth, a base that looks like natural gum tissue, and metal clasps that attach to natural teeth and anchor the new ones firmly in place.
A full replaces all of the teeth on one or both arches and is held in place with natural suction or possibly the assistance of a special adhesive. Like partials, the prosthetic contains replacement teeth and an acrylic base that mimics the appearance of gingival tissue.
Dental Implants
These are actually inserted directly into the jaw, bonding with the bone tissue like a natural tooth root. We then place a restoration that replaces the visible portion of the lost tooth. We can use them to replace a single tooth or place multiple implants to support a fixed prosthetic. If you have any questions about our tooth replacement options then please contact our office today.
