If you have misalignment we may recommend treatment using the Clear Aligner Systems system. With a series of clear plastic aligners, we can help you obtain a straighter and healthier smile. But how do you care for your smile during treatment? What steps should you take to keep your teeth clean and healthy while wearing your clear aligners?
Drinking Water
Even though the aligners can be removed before meals, you still need to take steps to protect your teeth. For example, if you drink soda, sports drinks, or energy drinks while wearing Clear Aligner Systems, the sugar particles can coat the teeth and remain trapped there due to the plastic aligners. Bacteria then has a perfect opportunity to break down the particles, increasing oral acidity and coating the teeth in plaque, which then weakens tooth enamel and makes cavities and gum inflammation (gingivitis) more likely. Instead, try drinking more water!
Brushing and Flossing
You should remove the aligners to brush your teeth for two minutes in the morning and again before going to bed. Each night before bed you should also floss your teeth thoroughly. Routine smile maintenance can protect your teeth from discoloration, cavities, gingivitis, and even gum disease.
Cutting Back on Sugary Foods
As we mentioned above, sugary drinks (and foods!) can endanger your smile. We recommend adding more fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy predicts, and nuts to your diets. These healthy food and snack alternatives make your smile less likely to suffer from poor oral health. After all, you’re wearing the aligners to enjoy a healthier and more attractive smile, why would you let bad habits compromise all of your hard work?
