Whether the result of an accident or poor oral hygiene, losing a tooth is a serious concern and one we urge patients to address immediately. We can offer a number of different options for replacing your missing tooth, such as a dental bridge or a dental implant. Which one is the best option for replacing a lost tooth? How do these two prosthetics differ?
What Does Losing a Tooth Mean for My Smile?
When you lose a tooth, then you have a gap in your smile. As a result, the surrounding teeth may drift form their positions, leading to the onset of misalignment. In addition, once the body registers the loss of a tooth root, then the flow of calcium and phosphorus to the surrounding jawbone ceases, leading to loss of jawbone density. Short term, this can lead to further tooth loss. Long term, a significantly aged appearance.
Dental Bridges
A dental bridge is often suggested for replacing between one and three teeth in a row. The prosthetic consists of the replacement tooth/teeth with crowns attached to each end. We will have prepared the teeth on either side of the gap in your smile. The crowns will be placed onto them, anchoring the new tooth in place. The prosthetic will typically last between 5 and 10 years.
Dental Implants
Implants are actually surgically inserted into the jaw, bonding with the bone tissue like a natural root. This actually simulates jawbone growth, preventing loss of density. In addition, the new tooth can last a lifetime with proper care and attention.
