When you have dental discoloration, you could feel ashamed of your smile’s appearance. But instead of hiding your smile, or relying on less-than-stellar results from store bought treatments, why not seek professional teeth whitening? In today’s blog, your Rochester, MN, dentist talks about how we use teeth whitening to help you achieve your brightest smile.
The Factors Behind Discoloration
What causes teeth to develop unsightly brown or yellow stains? Well, several factors could be responsible. For example, when we have diets high in sugar and starch, combined with improper brushing and flossing, this could lead to plaque buildup. These layers not only cause cavities and gum disease, but make stains more visible as well. Drinks with dark pigments, including soda, red wine, tea, and coffee, could be responsible too. Tobacco use could discolor your teeth as well, and also increase your risk of developing several forms of cancer. Often, taking steps to reduce discoloration in between visits with our team could also improve your overall oral health! In the meantime, we can brighten your smile with teeth whitening.
At-Home Teeth Whitening
If you have severe staining, we could provide an at-home teeth whitening treatment to remove these stains, while also limiting the risk of tooth sensitivity afterward. First, you stop by our office long enough for us to create a custom-made set of plastic trays. We then send these home with you, along with syringes of bleaching gel.
Once home, you add the bleaching gel to the trays and then wear them. The trays fit comfortably and ensure even results across your teeth. They also prevent the gel from being diluted. You wear them for a set amount of time, usually about an hour, each day. After one to two weeks, your teeth could be up to eight shades brighter. You then keep your tray and any of the remaining bleaching gel to use in the months to come for touch-ups.
Masking Stains
The above treatment works great for extrinsic teeth stains, which occur on the surface. But what about intrinsic teeth stains? These form beneath the enamel and could be difficult to remove. However, we could use dental bonding to mask them, or even place one or more porcelain veneers. These help you enjoy brighter smiles without teeth whitening.
