How Is CEREC Different?
In the past, the process of receiving a crown could take several appointments. You would attend a consultation appointment and have an impression taken of the area. Then you would have to wait several weeks for the crown to be sent to your dentist and bonded to your tooth. In the time that it took to wait for this, your risk of damaging the tooth even further was increased.
CEREC technology stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic. This advanced tool has changed the turnaround time for this process from a few weeks to just a few hours. When you chip a tooth, call your dentist as soon as possible so that we can look at it. Depending on the severity of the damage, we will let you know if it can be repaired in a same-day appointment or throughout a few visits. In many cases, a one-day repair is available.
During your same-day appointment, the area will be examined. Using an intraoral camera, your dentist will be able to take an impression of your smile and get precise measurements for the crown to be created. Instead of being sent to a lab, these measurements will be sent to the CEREC machine. The restoration piece will be crafted in our office in just a few hours. Then, it will be bonded to the damaged tooth. CEREC and traditional crowns are made of the same material, so there is no need for you to be concerned about the longevity and durability of a same-day crown.
Taking Care Of Your Smile After Restoration
Once the crown is bonded, you can enjoy the benefits of a repaired tooth. You will need to wait up to 24 hours to chew food to ensure that the piece stays in place. Follow your usual oral hygiene routine twice a day. You may notice that it feels different to brush or floss for a few days following your appointment, but this is normal. If you experience any pain or severe discomfort, call your dentist immediately as this is abnormal. After a few days, you will be able to eat and talk with no difficulty, and it will be like your tooth was never damaged.
