Do you need dental implants in Rochester MN? Well, do you have missing teeth? This dental prosthesis is designed to replace a lost tooth and restore your smile to full function and health. At Calcagno Cosmetic and Family Dentistry, we offer the latest in implant technology. Today, we look at how this unique and state-of-the-art tooth replacement system works.
How Do Implants Work?
Typically, a dental prosthesis only replaces the visible portion of the tooth. For example, dental bridges rely on crowns to anchor the artificial teeth and place. Dentures need natural suction combined with adhesives to hold them into place. Dental implants however, replace every part of the tooth. A biocompatible titanium implant post will be inserted into the jaw, where the bone tissue bones with it. This holds the implant in place. Once the area heals, we add an abutment that holds a restoration in place, typically a dental crown.
We can use this dental prosthesis to replace s single lost tooth or secure a full set of dentures. We can place multiple posts into the jaw to hold a set of dentures or a dental bridge that doesn’t slip or require adjustment every few years. In fact, dental implants have been known to offer up to 25 years of tooth replacement.
Do I Need Them?
If you’re interested in replace lost teeth, you need to know if you qualify. We will carefully exam your teeth and jaw to assess the cause of your tooth loss and the current state of your dental health. If you have gum disease, you may require periodontal treatment before receiving replacement teeth. Otherwise, just as gum disease causes adult tooth loss, it can cause implant failure. In addition, you will need an adequate amount of jawbone tissue to support the posts, otherwise you may need bone grafting prior to receiving dental implants.
