Addressing Common Dental Emergencies
In many cases you can address the immediate discomfort of a dental injury before you see the dentist.
- Chipped or Knocked-Out Tooth: If you chip a tooth then try to gather any pieces and bring them to the office. You can also place a cold compress against the side of the face to reduce swelling and use gauze to stem any bleeding. If you knock out a tooth only pick it up by the crown, never touch the root. Rinse the tooth under running water to remove dirt (but don’t wash away any tissue). Either place the tooth back into your socket or put it in a glass of milk and bring the tooth with you.
- Loose or Lost Restoration: If a filling or crown becomes loose you may be able to hold it in place with dental cement from a pharmacy. If you lose the restoration, try to recover it and bring it with you to the office. If not, we can still help. Remember, dental cement is a very temporary solution, only meant to bridge the time between the accident and seeing the dentist.
