Currently, studies from the Centers for Disease Control show that half of adults over the age of 30 suffer from periodontal disease. A disease that afflicts the gum tissue, this can lead to uncomfortable symptoms and even a higher risk of adult tooth loss. Do you have gum disease? If so, what are your treatment options?
What Causes Periodontal Disease?
A bacterial infection in the gum tissue causes the disease to form. What leads to this infection? Inflammation often starts following serious plaque buildup, lack of proper oral hygiene, the use of certain medications, or illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease. Changes in your hormonal levels can also lead to the onset of periodontal problems. The first step to treating the issue is identifying the root causes. From there the doctor can recommend a treatment plan to help improve your oral health.
What are the Symptoms of the Disease?
Do you need treatment? The early warning signs consist of discomfort in the gum tissue, such as redness, soreness, and even mild bleeding when you brush or floss your teeth. Along with gingival sensitivity come persistent bad breath, gum recession, and possibly even loose teeth. As the disease enters the periodontitis stage the connective tissues between your teeth and gums begin to dissolve, leading to a greater risk of adult tooth loss.
How Does the Doctor Treat the Issue?
Along with antimicrobial rinses and antibiotics, the doctor may suggest a scaling and root planing. Also known as a deep cleaning, this can help mange the problem or even reverse the disease in the early stages. The scaling involves using a device known as an ultrasonic scaler to remove plaque and tartar from the surface of the teeth. A root planing allows the doctor to remove the plaque from the surface of the exposed roots. Soon, healthy gingival tissue can once again adhere to the tooth, closing periodontal pockets and improving your oral health.
