While a whole smile is always preferred, you may be surprised to learn that sometimes removing a tooth can be crucial for your oral health. In the cases of infection or impacted wisdom teeth, tooth removal is necessary to avoid a host of uncomfortable oral health complications. When do you need an extraction? What can you expect from this procedure?
Wisdom Teeth
Also known as third molars, these are up to four additional molars that erupt in our late teens or early 20s. However, since are mouth only comfortably accommodate 28 teeth, the arrival of 4 extra molars can lead to a number of issues, including misalignment. If the teeth only partially erupt then an impaction can occur, leading to discomfort, infection, or damage to the teeth.
Often, the doctor elects to remove the teeth prior to eruption to help prevent the problems associated with the arrival of these extra teeth.
Dental Infection
When tooth decay isn’t treated in a timely manner an infection can develop, leading to pain when chewing, fever, swelling near the teeth, and a foul tasting discharge. Over time, the tooth can die and require removal to prevent the spread of infection to other teeth or the jawbone. If we can’t address the problem with a root canal then we perform an extraction.
Will the Procedure be Comfortable?
Prior to the procedure we provide a local anesthetic, as well as dental sedation to help you remain calm and comfortable during the procedure. We then remove the tooth. We will provide detailed aftercare instructions and schedule follow up visits.
Can My Teeth be Replaced?
If a tooth is removed because it is damaged or infected, then we can discuss replacement options. We may be able to place a dental bridge or dental implant to replace the missing tooth.
