What Does A Toothache Mean?

rochester toothaches

You should see us every six months for a checkup and clawing, but what if you encounter discomfort in between these visits? A toothache may seem minor, but this could often lead to the presence of a cavity. In today’s blog, your Rochester, MN, dentist talks about when to seek treatment, and what a toothache could mean.

The Causes of Tooth Pain

A toothache in your smile could be caused by several different factors. Temporary aches could be the result of sinus infection or allergy issues, or possibly a cold winter wind, changes in elevation, or an airplane ride. But these all pass after a few hours. When your aches stick around for a day or two, this could mean you have a cavity, one severe enough to threaten an infection without treatment. Tooth decay occurs when the outer enamel no longer keeps bacteria at bay. Injury or poor oral hygiene habits could weaken and erode the enamel to expose the sensitive inner dentin. Tooth decay forms and will grow and spread without treatment. Which means you need to see us right away if you have an aching tooth.

Treatment and Prevention

Our team will examine the tooth to assess the cause of your toothache. We then numb the tooth so we can gently remove all decay and clean the surfaces before we apply the filling material. Instead of metal, we use a composite resin that is safe for all ages, and can also be color matched to blend with your smile seamlessly. As we cure the materials beneath a light we will sculpt the tooth. The last step is to polish it for a brighter appearance. In one visit, we halt cavities to prevent infections or abscesses from developing.

To help avoid tooth decay, we recommend taking time to brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste for two minutes, and to floss every evening. Limiting your consumption of sugar and starch is a factor too, and you should see us for a cleaning so we can remove all plaque and tartar.

What About Your Gums?

We’ve talked about toothaches and tooth decay, but what about your gums? If they feel sore, look red, or bleed easily, this could indicate gingivitis or the early stages of gum disease. Treatment is ended to manage the concern and protect your smile from the major complications, including adult tooth loss. As with teeth, negative changes mean you need to see us right away for an exam!
